El Ministerio de Defensa serbio declaró a última hora del lunes que, en respuesta a los últimos acontecimientos en la región y a su convicción de que Kosovo se preparaba para atacar a los serbios y retirar por la fuerza las barricadas, el Presidente Aleksandar Vucic había ordenado poner en máxima alerta al ejército y la policía de Serbia.

Los serbios que protestan en la ciudad de Mitrovica, dividida étnicamente en el norte de Kosovo, levantaron nuevas barricadas el martes, horas después de que Serbia dijera que había puesto a su ejército en máxima alerta de combate tras semanas de escalada de las tensiones entre Belgrado y Pristina.

El Ministerio de Defensa serbio declaró a última hora del lunes que, en respuesta a los últimos acontecimientos en la región y a su convicción de que Kosovo se preparaba para atacar a los serbios y retirar por la fuerza las barricadas, el Presidente Aleksandar Vucic había ordenado poner en máxima alerta al ejército y la policía de Serbia.

"No hay motivos para que cunda el pánico, pero sí para estar preocupados", declaró a última hora del lunes el ministro de Defensa serbio, Milos Vucevic, a la televisión RTS.

Desde el 10 de diciembre, los serbios del norte de Kosovo han levantado múltiples barricadas en Mitrovica y sus alrededores y han intercambiado disparos con la policía tras la detención de un ex policía serbio por presunta agresión a policías en activo durante una protesta anterior.

Alrededor de 50.000 serbios viven en la parte norte de Kosovo, de mayoría albanesa, y se niegan a reconocer al gobierno de Pristina o al Estado. Consideran Belgrado su capital y cuentan con el apoyo de Serbia, país del que Kosovo declaró su independencia en 2008.

"Kosovo no puede dialogar con bandas criminales y debe restablecerse la libertad de circulación. No debe haber barricadas en ninguna carretera", dijo el gobierno kosovar en un comunicado el lunes.

Añadió que la policía tenía capacidad y disposición para actuar, pero estaba esperando a que la fuerza de mantenimiento de la paz KFOR Kosovo de la OTAN, que mantiene un papel neutral, respondiera a su petición de retirar las barricadas.

"Instamos a todas las partes a que contribuyan a garantizar la seguridad y la libertad de circulación en Kosovo, y a que impidan que los mensajes engañosos afecten al proceso de diálogo", declaró la KFOR en un comunicado.

En Mitrovica, el martes por la mañana se estacionaron camiones para bloquear la carretera que une la parte de mayoría serbia de la ciudad con la de mayoría albanesa.

Los serbios locales exigen la liberación del oficial detenido y tienen otras exigencias antes de retirar las barricadas.

Los alcaldes de etnia serbia de los municipios del norte, junto con los jueces locales y unos 600 agentes de policía, dimitieron el mes pasado en protesta por la decisión del gobierno de Kosovo de sustituir las matrículas de automóviles serbias por otras expedidas por Pristina.
